THE BETON EXHIBITION HALL OF NANJING UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS
The half-century-old campus of Nanjing University of the Arts accommodates not only numerous coffee shops, book cafes, and creative stores, but also diverse kinds of art installations scattering all over the place. Among the crowded dormitory complexes, the university planned to renovate the ground floors of the No.46 dormitory building into a two-storey art gallery. The lower floor would be used as an “Ancient Porcelain Research Showroom”, and the upper floor will have an “Ancient Oil Painting Restoration Showroom”.
Between traditions and arts, we identified the common characteristics of calmness and modesty. To correspond to this feeling, we designed a small building with fair-faced concrete named “The BETON Exhibition Hall”. The outer arc of the inner vault is used to pull the space from the bottom up to the skylight, creating a two-story shared space, offering an opportunity for dialogue between the two themes.
