MITSUI GARDEN HOTEL KYOTO KAWARAMACHI JOKYOJI
The project is a reconstruction of Jokyoji, a temple located in Kyoto, as part of a development plan for the Teramachi street area. The 1,500-year history of Japanese temples began in the late 6th century when Buddhism was first imported. Since then, small-scale temples in Kyoto and their ethos have been preserved by supporters and priests. However, they are confronting difficulty surviving the aging buildings, lack of successors, and decreasing numbers of supporters. Jokyoji is no exception. The main hall of the temple has a solemn and mysterious atmosphere created by 48 stone lanterns. The interior design including furniture and art is kept in a black and white tone, expressing light and shade. The calligraphy art displayed in the atrium lobby especially represents the aesthetic.
